Description
“At the beginning of our nearly fifty-yearlong friendship, in the late 1950s, Charlie (as he was lovingly called by all who knew him) told me that there were seven ‘pillars’ of his faith: St. Gregory the Great, St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Gertrude, St. Francis de Sales, St. Teresa of Avila, and St.John of the Cross. But he had a vast knowledge of every other saint, known and unknown, and of Holy Scripture, with his mastery of Hebrew. This learning was ‘the bottom of the iceberg’ of which his own writings were merely ‘the top’.
“He told me once, ‘I say nothing that has not been said before. It’s the teaching of the Church. I do what a mother does by chewing the food for the baby. That’s my job.’ Our friend, Bernard G. Freeman said: ‘He brought Christ to us’ and ‘When Charlie said or wrote something, he hit your brain and heart at the same time. It’s the truth.’
“He had a very special affinity to St. John of the Cross and owned original Spanish editions of the complete works of St. Teresa and St. John of the Cross with several annotated copies in the English translation. He knew him by heart!
“What a great privilege and honor to have this holy and learned man – who was an angel from heaven and the best friend whom God has placed into my life – write this unique treatise in the form of a fifty-four page personal letter to me. I thank God for it and pray that it will also inspire others who seek close union with Him.
